THUNDERHEAD MONUMENT
Thunderhead is a monumental public installation and a powerful recognition of our 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
Our Approach
Thunderhead is a monumental public installation and a powerful testament to the history, resilience, and vibrant future of 2SLGBTQI+ communities.
Thunderhead is being developed by the LGBT Purge Fund, in collaboration with Canadian Heritage and the National Capital Commission.
The Opportunity
Cloudcrete (GFRC), was used to create the stone-like exterior representing a thunderhead cloud—a metaphor for the rising voices demanding justice and equality.
The inside, hollowed center is lined with thousands of mirrored tiles, creating an infinite play of light that reflects the diverse identities of visitors in a sparkling celebration.
This architectural landmark serves as a transformative sanctuary, providing a dedicated space to honour the memory of lives lost to prejudice and the celebration of a brighter future ahead.
