FIELD GUIDE

In a place of healing we expect care, hope for connection, and long for comfort. Diversion can help, too, and a sense of enlightened diversion is at the heart of Field Guide.

Our Approach

Heavy enabled the beautiful design of artist Ralph Helmick, Field Guide, to come to life. It comprises of three pieces: the screen, the cylinder, and the tactile panel.

The Opportunity

The screen and the cylinder were designed to be read by individuals with 20/200 vision. The tactile panel was designed to allow those without sight to be able enjoy this epic naturally inspired network.

This beautiful reflection of nature incorporates 22 renderings of species indigenous to Northern California. The exterior piece is laser-cut steel and measures 9’ high, 20’ wide and 13” deep. The interior cylinder is aluminum and measures 7’-6” high, 6’ in diameter.

Field Guide posed many challenges throughout the production stage. One of the priorities of working on the tactile panel was ensuring soft edge quality because much of it is intended to be interacted with by sense of touch as much as sense of sight.
