Illuminating the night life in an already vibrant city.
Suspended overhead at the Telus Gardens building between West Georgia St. and Robson St. in downtown Vancouver, Beyond the Sea, Against the Sun provides a unique experience for all who pass by.
The Opportunity
Heavy was brought on by Westbank Corp. to help execute Boyce’s illuminating vision through our one-of-a-kind PLAN—BUILD™ process. Designed by Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Boyce, the lantern shape is based on a geometric pattern from a leaf form found in an abstract concrete tree sculpture by Jan and Joel Martel.
The Approach
With 25 lanterns in total, Heavy was tasked with how to best bring to life the artists concept into reality by planning several aspects of this project including: detail design, prototyping, material procurement, site coordination, scheduling, fabrication and install.
Each lantern shell is lit with RGB colour changing lights, and the powder coated perforated stainless steel shell consists of two halves that are bolted together to encase the light fixture inside. The result creates a welcoming inner-city corridor for Vancouverites and helps make this unique space unforgettable.
